The Malaysian Immigration Department has detained 62 foreign nationals for working without proper documentation at several eateries in Johor Baru.
In a statement on Sunday, Johor Immigration Director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the arrests were made during a joint operation conducted at 2 restaurants in the city from 7pm on Saturday, according to Malaysian news portal The Star.
He said, “Checks were conducted on 143 individuals at 2 restaurants. The 62 foreigners detained, aged between 3 and 50, were detained for various immigration offences such as not possessing valid travel documents, overstaying and misusing social visit passes.”
Among those detained were 3 Bangladeshi men, 5 Indonesian men, 30 Myanmar men, 1 Nepali man, 1 Sri Lankan man, 2 Indian men, 2 Vietnamese women, 3 Indonesian women, 14 Myanmar women and 1 Myanmar girl.
Mohd Rusdi said the detainees were taken to the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot for further investigation under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963.
He added 2 Malaysian restaurant managers were also detained under the Immigration Act for employing foreign workers without valid permits.
