Jamaat-e-Islami and six other like-minded political parties held processions and rallies after Jum’a prayers in the capital on Friday to press their longstanding demands.
The demands include implementation of July Charter and introduction of Proportional Representation (PR) system.
Jamaat-e-Islami organised a mass procession and a rally in the capital at the south gate of Baitul Mukarram Mosque in the afternoon.
Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar reiterated their demands. He said public opinion on the PR system must be sought through a referendum.
He further criticised the 14-party alliance for supporting the fascist regime and called for a ban on its political activities.
Islami Andolan Bangladesh brought out a procession from the north gate of Baitul Mukarram at noon. Islami Andolan Ameer Syed Mohammad Rezaul Karim led the programme.
Later, the party held a rally in Paltan area, calling for the PR system as the only solution to the ongoing political crisis. They also demanded a referendum for the implementation of July Charter.
Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis staged a rally at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram when its Ameer Mohammad Mamunul Haque condemned the government’s failure to ensure the legal foundation of July Charter.
He stated that declaring an election schedule without the legal framework of the July Charter would betray the blood of the martyrs.
Mamunul stressed that the upcoming general election should be held in February 2026 only after the legal basis of the July Charter is secured.
Khilafat Majlis also held a rally and a procession, where its General Secretary Dr Ahmed Abdul Kader demanded the immediate legal and constitutional foundation of July Charter.
He emphasised that elections held without the PR system would be rejected by the people of Bangladesh. Following the rally, Khilafat Majlis also organised a procession.
Nizam-e-Islam Party, Bangladesh Khilafat Andolan, and National Democratic Party (JAP) also held processions to meet the same demands.
Other demands include ensuring a level-playing field for a peaceful and fair election, trial for the last government’s crimes, and banning activities of National Party and the Awami League-led 14-party alliance.
