A Dhaka court on Tuesday imposed a travel ban on Awami League leader and former lawmaker from Joypurhat-1 constituency, Shamsul Alam Dudu, along with his wife Meher Nigar, daughter Soheli Nazmin Tania, and son Meheraj Alam over corruption allegations.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order following a plea by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC’s Assistant Director Mohammad Shafiullah filed the petition for the travel ban.
According to the petition, in his 2014 election affidavit, Shamshul Alam Dudu declared assets worth 20 lakh 28 thousand taka. However, he is currently under investigation for allegedly accumulating illegal assets valued at 1 crore 50 lakh taka. A dedicated team has been formed to investigate the matter further.
The investigation revealed that during his tenure as an MP, Dudu, along with his dependents, amassed significant wealth and attempted to transfer it abroad through money laundering. Authorities believe that the accused may attempt to leave the country, and to ensure a fair investigation, preventing their travel abroad has become crucial.
Shamshul Alam Dudu was elected as an MP from Joypurhat-1 constituency on the Awami League ticket in the 2014, 2018, and 2024 national elections.
