Hasan Mahmud claimed his maiden five-wicket haul on home soil to put Bangladesh in control of the second Test against West Indies in Sylhet, as the visitors reached 322-8 at lunch on the second day.

West Indies, who resumed at 235-4, added 87 runs in the first session but lost four wickets. Hasan took three of them to complete his fifth five-wicket haul in Test cricket, which is highest by a Bangladeshi pacer while Mehidy Hasan Miraz removed Justin Greaves, who made 51, by knocking over his off stump.

It was Hasan’s first Test five-for in Bangladesh. His previous four had come away from home, in Pakistan, India, Australia and the United Arab Emirates, making him only the second bowler after Australia’s Nathan Lyon to claim each of his first five Test five-wicket hauls in five different countries.

Hasan completed the milestone through a clever piece of work from Litton Das. In the 90th over, the wicketkeeper moved closer to the stumps as Joshua Bishop looked to play his shots. When Bishop attempted to drive a full delivery, his back foot was off the ground and Litton whipped off the bails in a flash. The third umpire ruled him stumped, giving Hasan his fifth wicket. The dismissal also made Hasan the first Bangladesh fast bowler to claim a Test wicket through a stumping.

Earlier, Bangladesh had taken the second new ball in the 81st over, with Taskin Ahmed sharing the responsibility. Hasan struck in the following over, dismissing Amir Jangoo and Roston Chase in consecutive deliveries to move within one wicket of a hat-trick.

Jangoo, who resumed on 111, was bowled for 133 off 212 balls. Hasan set him up with three fuller deliveries before producing an inswinger that Jangoo chose to leave, only to see the new Kookaburra ball crash into the top of off stump. His dismissal ended a 106-run fifth-wicket partnership with Justin Greaves.

Chase was next to go, edging a defensive shot to Litton after reaching for a delivery. The ball deviated 1.6 degrees after pitching, with the movement beating the West Indies captain.
