The Hill District Council has extended relief and financial support to 28 families and businesses affected by the recent violence in Khagrachhari, which followed the gang rape of a Marma community schoolgirl.
On Saturday morning, Shefalika Tripura, Chairman of the Hill District Council, handed over the aid during a ceremony at the council’s conference room. Each victim received Tk 10,000 in cash and a sack of rice.
Shefalika Tripura expressed, “It is our moral responsibility to stand by the victims of violence. The council will always be here to support people during their times of need.”
The event was attended by council members and local dignitaries.
The violence erupted on September 23, following the gang rape of a schoolgirl from the Marma community, sparking widespread protests in Khagrachhari. The Jumma student community led marches, rallies, and road blockades demanding the arrest of the perpetrators and exemplary punishment.
As the protests turned violent, clashes between the two sides led to the burning of more than 90 houses, shops, and other structures. Incidents of vandalism and looting also took place, with most of the victims being from the Marma community. Several government and private offices were also damaged.
Tragically, the violence escalated, resulting in the deaths of three people in Guimara on September 28.
