Home adviser vows action over ex-President’s exit

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has announced if he fails to punish the officials involved in former President Abdul Hamid’s departure from the country, he will step down himself.

He made this statement on Thursday afternoon to leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in front of the Dinajpur Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Earlier, while the Home Affairs adviser was holding meetings with officials inside the DC office, leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement staged a sit-in protest at the office gate.

After the meeting, he spoke with the movement’s leaders, assuring them that punitive actions would be taken against everyone involved in the former President’s departure.

An airport official confirmed the former President’s departure during the early hours of Thursday. He left Dhaka for Bangkok on Thai Airways flight TG-340. Abdul Hamid was accompanied by one of his sons and a son-in-law.

A murder case was filed against former President Abdul Hamid on January 14 at Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station. It also names former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Saima Wazed Putul, and Obaidul Quader.
