Bollywood playback singer and actor Zubeen Garg, best known for the song “Ya Ali,” died at the age of 52 in Singapore.
Indian media reported that Garg traveled to Singapore for the North East Festival. During paragliding, he fell into the sea and lost consciousness. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was given, but he did not recover.
Assam Minister Ashok Singhal expressed his grief on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “I am deeply saddened by the untimely demise of our beloved Zubeen Garg. Assam has lost not just a voice, but its heartbeat.”
He added, “Zubeen was a pride of Assam and the entire nation, who carried our culture, emotions, and spirit to every corner of the world through his music. Generations have found joy, comfort, and identity in his songs. The void left by his passing can never be filled.”
Offering condolences to Garg’s family, the minister said, “Heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends, and countless fans. May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire forever. Om Shanti.”
Born on November 18, 1972, in Jorhat, Assam, Zubeen Garg was a renowned playback singer, composer, lyricist, and actor. He gained national recognition in 2006 with the Bollywood hit “Ya Ali” from Gangster.
Garg also contributed to Assamese and Bengali music in modern, folk, devotional, and Bihu genres, establishing himself as a leading cultural figure in Northeast India.
