Bangladesh’s campaign at the Asia Cup suffered a major setback in Abu Dhabi, where they fell to a heavy six-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka. With only 139 runs to defend, Litton Das’s side never looked in control, leaving their hopes of reaching the Super Four hanging by a thread.

From the stands at Zayed Cricket Stadium, interim government youth and sports adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan witnessed Bangladesh’s struggles first-hand. Later, speaking to the media, he called for patience and positivity.

“There is no reason to be disappointed. I think we should remain hopeful. We have one more match left. Although today’s game could have been better,” Asif said

“Our team has had a problem with consistency right from the start. I hope our boys will play well in the next match.”

By the time Asif entered the ground, Bangladesh were already reeling at four wickets down. The early collapse left the batting side in tatters, with only 30 runs on the board for three wickets at the end of the six-over powerplay.

“We did poorly in the powerplay,” he reflected. “If we could have given a good push in those overs, then the whole match could have been made competitive.”

Before the game against Sri Lanka, Asif met with the entire Bangladesh squad, though he kept the details private. “Before a match, there isn’t much scope for long conversations. I only wished the team best of luck and listened to them,” he said.

The loss has made Bangladesh’s route to the next stage increasingly difficult. Even victory in their final group match against Afghanistan on 16 September may not be enough, with the team dependent on other results.

Asif, however, remains focused on what is within the team’s control. “It depends entirely on our performance. The next match will make it clear,” he concluded.
