Home Affairs Adviser Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has urged people to report to the police immediately if they see any illegal weapons. He said, “If information is provided, the accused will be arrested. The informant will be rewarded, and their identity will be kept confidential.”
He made these remarks while speaking to journalists after inspecting the discussed Guagachhia Police Camp on the banks of the Meghna in Gazaria Upazila, Munshiganj, on Saturday afternoon.
The Home Affairs Adviser stated that while efforts are being made to strengthen the police in maintaining law and order, patrols by the Coast Guard will also be increased. He said, “This camp has been opened temporarily in response to the heartfelt demand of the locals. I hope it will turn into a permanent outpost.”
Regarding the overall situation in the country, he said, “There are various problems in the country. Still, we must continue working. Everyone will want to secure their own interests, but the government’s effort will be to maintain normal law and order.”
Speaking about Nayan and Piyash, he said, “It is heard that they are not in the country. However, if they return to the country, they will have no place other than Keraniganj jail. They have no place in this area.”
He added, “A proposal to make the outpost permanent has already been sent from the Home Ministry to the Finance Ministry. By the grace of Allah, it will be approved as a permanent outpost.”
Present at the meeting were Deputy Inspector General of Dhaka Range Police Rezaul Karim Mallik, Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner Fatema Tul Jannat, Police Superintendent Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar, Gazaria Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Ashraful Alam, Fire Service and Coast Guard officials, and other representatives of the local administration.
The temporary police camp was established in Jamalpur village of Guagachhia Union on August 22. For many years, in Jamalpur and Shimulia villages of this union, surrounded by the Meghna and Gomti rivers, the river dacoits Nayan-Piyash and their associates have been carrying out terrorist activities.
Police reported that there are 29 cases against Nayan Sarkar and 24 cases against his cousin Piyash Sarkar for charges including weapons, drugs, extortion, brawls, and others.
Locals allege that due to them, incidents like controlling sand quarries, extortion, attacks, and murders have been occurring for a long time.
On July 28, terrorists Abdul Mannan and Hridoy Bagh were shot dead while trying to prevent sand extraction. Later, a police camp was set up following this incident. On August 23, men and women of Jamalpur village held a human chain against Nayan-Piyash. After that, there was also an attack on the police camp by the dacoits.
