The chamber judge of the Appellate Division has extended the stay order on the High Court’s suspension of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election until Wednesday.
A full bench of the Appellate Division will hear the matter on that day.
The stay was granted on Tuesday in response to an application filed by the Dhaka University (DU) authorities seeking to suspend the High Court’s earlier order. Chamber Judge Farah Mahbub passed the order.
Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir, appeared in court on behalf of the university in support of the petition.
Previously, on Monday, the High Court had ordered the suspension of the DUCSU election until October 30. The same day, the chamber court issued a stay on that suspension order.
The legal challenge arose after BM Fahmida Alam, a candidate for the Left Alliance nominated panel “Muktijuddho o Gontantoirik Andolon” (Liberation War and Democratic Movement), filed a writ petition with the High Court on August 28 challenging the candidacy of SM Farhad in the DUCSU elections.
According to the announced schedule, the DUCSU elections were originally set to be held on September 9.
Several student groups, including Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shibir, Ganoatrik Chhatra Songshad, and leftist student organisations, have already announced separate panels. In total, about 10 panels have registered to contest the elections, combining full and partial panels.
This year, a total of 471 candidates contested 28 positions in the DUCSU polls, including 62 women candidates. The membership posts had the highest number of candidates, with 217 contestants. A total of 1,035 candidates were vying for 13 positions in 18 halls of Dhaka University.
