A Dhaka court has acquitted BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir of charges related to attempted murder and obstructing police duties in a case filed in 2013.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain passed the order on Sunday following a court hearing. Syed Zainal Abedin Mezbah, lawyer of Fakhrul, confirmed the development. However, the trial proceedings against the remaining accused will continue, he added.
The case was originally filed on March 2, 2013 with Ramna Model Police Station against Fakhrul and 27 others. Later that year, the investigation officer submitted a charge sheet against 21 individuals, including Fakhrul.
According to the case documents, BNP and its affiliated organizations held a protest rally on March 2, 2013 near the party’s central office. Following the rally, Fakhrul and others allegedly obstructed police activities at the Moghbazar intersection. They were accused of throwing bricks, hurling crude bombs, and firing shots with an intention to harm law enforcers and the public.
Subsequently, the defense council challenged the charges against Fakhrul in the High Court. Later, the court accepted the plea and acquitted Fakhrul from the charges.
