The Dhaka District Administration and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) have launched a two-day special drive on Wednesday to evict illegal structures on the banks of Buriganga river in the capital.
This information was confirmed in a letter signed by BIWTA Joint Director (Ports and Transport Division) Mohammad Mustafizur Rahman. The letter mentioned that the eviction operation is being conducted as per the directions of writ petitions filed in the High Court.
The drive will be carried out from Postogola Bridge to Dhopatiya or Katurail Kheyaghat. This includes the riverside areas of Char Mirerbagh, Nayatola, Doleshwar, Hazaribagh and Katurail Mouza of South Keraniganj. All types of illegal structures will be demolished from these areas.
The mobile court will be led by the executive magistrates of the district administration and a number of police personnel will be deployed during this time to thwart any untoward incident.
BIWTA sources said that the river is narrowing due to illegal encroachment and constructions built on the banks of Buriganga for a long time. This has seriously threatened the environment and maritime safety.
This campaign is being conducted jointly by the local administration, district magistrate and law enforcement agencies as part of the regular eviction drives against illegal encroachment.
