The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has issued an arrest warrant against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Patwary and four others in connection with a case filed over killing of seven youths in Joydevpur, Gazipur in 2016.

A three-member panel of the tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, issued the order on Monday, following a petition submitted by the prosecution seeking arrest warrants from them.

The other members of the tribunal were Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

The other accused are Gazipur’s the then Superintendent of Police (SP) Harun Or Rashid, Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s former head of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Monirul Islam, and Bogura’s the then superintendent of police and additional superintendent of police.

Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim appeared for the prosecution at the tribunal on Monday. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam and Mohammad Mizanul Islam were also present.

According to case documents, on October 8, 2016, law enforcement agencies detained the seven youths from different district and places of the country and kept them confined in a house in Joydevpur, Gazipur.

Later, they conducted a raid on the place branded it as ‘militants hideout’ locking it outside. At one stage, all seven people were killed in firing.

One of them was Ibrahim, 19, a student of a madrasa in Jatrabari. Ibrahim’s father filed a complaint with the tribunal’s investigation agency for the extrajudicial killing of his son.

The investigation agency of the tribunal sought the arrest warrants against the five people, including former IGP Javed Patwary, as the primary evidence in the incident has been found.
