The European Union (EU) has called upon all parties of Bangladesh to engage in peaceful and constructive dialogue to embed key governance and human rights reforms ahead of the parliamentary elections.

“Bangladesh can count on the EU’s support as it moves ahead with its democratic process,” said the EU Embassy in Bangladesh in a statement.

The EU Embassy has issued the statement, marking the first anniversary of July Mass Uprising in Bangladesh.

One year back, Bangladeshis from all walks of life took to the streets to stand up for their rights and demand a more just and democratic future, the embassy said.

“Today we honour their courage and resilience, remember those who lost their lives, and reaffirm our support for the survivors,” it said.

Canada, Italy and Germany issued statements congratulating the people of Bangladesh on the day and honoured the memory of those who lost their lives.

“Canada joins the people of Bangladesh in marking this important day to recognise their courage and democratic aspirations. We stand in solidarity with all those working towards a just, peaceful, and inclusive future,” said the Canadian High Commission in Bangladesh.

The Italian embassy said they congratulate Bangladesh and its people for carrying forward a transition process towards a more democratic and prosperous country underpinned by inclusivity and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

“Italy honours the memory of those who lost their lives and renews is support for the aspirations to build a more cohesive and equitable society for all citizens,” it said.

The German embassy said it stands with the people of Bangladesh on this day.

“We remain committed to supporting the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people for a peaceful, inclusive and democratic future that ensures the rule of law, justice, and dignity for all.”
