Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff has won re-election in Georgia, defeating Republican challenger and US Representative Mike Collins and strengthening Democratic control in the key swing state.

The victory was projected less than an hour after polls closed, prompting loud cheers and applause from supporters at the Georgia Democrats’ watch party in Atlanta, reports BBC.

As one of the first major projections of Tuesday’s midterm elections, the race is crucial in determining whether President Donald Trump’s Republicans or the opposition Democrats will gain control of Congress. The outcome is expected to shape the remainder of Trump’s presidency. Although it was still early in the evening, Ossoff’s decisive victory raised hopes of a strong overall performance for Democrats.

Addressing the jubilant crowd in Atlanta, Ossoff thanked his family and Georgia voters for their support. He responded with “I love you, too” as supporters shouted their appreciation.

Turning to key campaign issues, he highlighted the economic difficulties facing ordinary Americans and criticised big pharmaceutical companies, corporate America and alleged corruption in the White House.

“This moment is an opening not for restoration, but for reformation,” Ossoff said.

“And so, amidst our celebration tonight, we must acknowledge that the underlying crisis gripping our Republic remains, and that therefore, our most vital work lies ahead.”

Throughout the campaign, Ossoff, seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party, focused on voters’ concerns over affordability and the rising cost of living. Exit polls identified these as the top priorities for many voters.

He repeatedly criticised Collins for supporting Trump’s tariffs, which have been linked to rising inflation, and portrayed his rival as loyal to a “failed president”.

Collins, a member of the US House of Representatives, blamed former President Joe Biden for the rising cost of living and defended his support for Trump’s war in Iran.

With opinion polls showing Ossoff holding a comfortable lead, Republicans had shifted campaign resources from Georgia to other contests.

Republicans had hoped for a more competitive race, but Georgia’s political landscape has changed in recent years. The state had voted reliably Republican for decades before Joe Biden narrowly won it in 2020. Donald Trump then carried Georgia in 2024.

Georgia’s term-limited Republican Governor Brian Kemp was initially considered the favourite to challenge Ossoff but declined to enter the race.

Political commentators suspected Kemp had avoided the contest because of Ossoff’s growing popularity, amid speculation that the Democrat might consider a presidential run in 2028.

Ossoff repeatedly dismissed such speculation during the campaign, saying he had “zero interest” in running for president. However, his convincing re-election victory is expected to fuel further speculation about his potential as a leading contender in the 2028 presidential race.
