Police have detained a man over the theft of two truckloads of wheat from the Maheswarpasha Silo in Daulatpur, Khulna.
The detainee is Arif Hossain, president of the Maheswarpasha Food Depot Labour Union.
Protesting his detention, workers blocked the Jessore-Khulna highway in front of the Maniktala CSD depot on Tuesday morning. They set fire to tyres, causing traffic congestion on both sides. The blockade was ongoing as of 10:45am.
The theft was detected at around 8pm on Monday, when two trucks loaded with wheat were being dispatched without official government documents or the required permissions. Storage authorities alerted the police, who visited the scene and launched an investigation.
Later that night, police detained Arif Hossain and took him to the police station.
