The prosecution has filed formal charges against seven leaders of the Awami League, including former minister and 14-party alliance coordinator Amir Hossain Amu, in a case over crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising.

The prosecution filed the charges at the Registrar’s Office of the International Crimes Tribunal on Monday. Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed the matter.

The six other accused are Shahjahan Khan, Abdul Razzaque, Lt Col (retd) Muhammad Faruk Khan, Dipu Moni, Mirza Azam and Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, former energy adviser to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

According to the prosecution, the accused have been charged under the principle of superior responsibility.

The charges allege that they attended meetings of the 14-party alliance during the July uprising and played roles in political decisions related to the mass killings, planning killings following the imposition of a curfew, and deciding to use lethal weapons to suppress the protesters.

Earlier, the investigation agency submitted its report after completing an investigation into the seven accused.
