A clash erupted between police and garment workers in the Mirpur-2 area of Dhaka on Monday.
Police fired tear gas shells and sound grenades to bring the situation under control.
The incident occurred as workers continued their protests, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000.
Confirming the matter, Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-charge Hafizur Rahman said workers had attempted to block the road, but police dispersed them.
Earlier, around 9:15am, police dispersed workers who attempted to take positions on the road in the Mirpur-10 area.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed held a meeting with garment factory owners at the Secretariat to discuss the workers’ demands.
On Sunday, workers began demonstrating around 9am at the Mirpur-10 intersection. The protest later spread to Mirpur-11, Mirpur-12, the Prashika intersection and nearby areas as workers from different factories joined in.
The situation escalated when police attempted to remove protesters from the roads. Law enforcement personnel used batons, tear gas, sound grenades and water cannons to disperse the crowds, triggering clashes between workers and police. A police vehicle was also set on fire during the violence in Mirpur-11.
The unrest disrupted traffic across Mirpur and prompted the closure of the Mirpur-10 and Mirpur-11 metro rail stations for security reasons.
Police subsequently deployed additional personnel to the affected areas, cleared the roads and restored normal traffic movement.
