A Dhaka court has shown former Shariatpur-1 lawmaker and Awami League organising secretary BM Mozammel Haque arrested in an attempted murder case filed over an attack on a man in the capital’s Bhatara area during the July mass uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order on Monday afternoon following a hearing on an application filed by the investigation officer.
Defence lawyer Liton Mia confirmed the development.
Earlier, Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman of Bhatara Police Station, the investigation officer in the case, submitted an application to the court on 27 October seeking to show Mozammel Haque arrested in the case.
Public prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid argued in favour of the application, while defence lawyer Liton Mia and several other lawyers opposed it.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court ordered that Mozammel Haque be shown arrested in the case.
According to the case statement, complainant Md Shamim Mia joined a demonstration on the 100-feet road in Bhatara on 19 July 2024. During the demonstration, he sustained four bullet wounds in different parts of his body.
After receiving treatment, Shamim filed an attempted murder case against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and several others.
BM Mozammel Haque was named as an accused in the first information report (FIR) and was shown arrested in the case on Monday.
He is already in jail after being arrested in several other cases.
