A long traffic jam was created in the Hemayetpur area of Savar following a demonstration by ready-made garment workers demanding a salary increase.
Traffic movement was disrupted around 1.00 pm on Sunday when workers blocked the road heading towards Savar and Aminbazar. The road blockade caused severe traffic congestion in the area, causing suffering to ordinary commuters.
Speaking to protesting workers, it was learned that their current monthly salary is Tk 12,500. Describing this wage as inadequate, they demanded that their monthly salary be fixed at Tk 30,000.
Meanwhile, an attack occurred at AKH Tower garment factory in Hemayetpur during the demonstration. According to eyewitnesses, workers of the factory were kept locked inside as they did not join the protest. Angered by this, demonstrators hurled brickbats targeting the factory, injuring several workers.
Protesters also behaved aggressively towards journalists during the demonstration. Eyewitnesses said some demonstrators chased anyone seen taking photographs or recording video to snatch their mobile phones.
Members of law enforcement forces later arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. Traffic movement on the road returned to normal around 4.30 pm.
