A total of 172 Bangladeshi migrants who wished to return home voluntarily arrived in Bangladesh from Misrata, Libya, on Thursday.
A Buraq Air flight, UZ-222, landed at Dhaka airport around 4:51am.
The repatriation was facilitated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the relevant ministries and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) welcomed the returnees at the airport.
Most of the repatriated Bangladeshis reportedly entered Libya with the assistance of human traffickers, intending to travel illegally to Europe by sea. Many of them were allegedly abducted and tortured in Libya at various times.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested that the returnees share their harrowing experiences with others to help raise public awareness.
The IOM provided each returnee with travel expenses, food items and basic medical care, as well as temporary accommodation where necessary.
