A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed Diamond World Managing Director Dilip Kumar Agarwala on a four-day police remand in an attempted murder case involving the shooting of a protester during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in August 2024.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order after police sought a 10-day remand for questioning.

State Counsel Mohammad Shamdoha Suman confirmed the decision.

Uttara West Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Suman Miah, the investigating officer, submitted the remand petition, saying custodial interrogation was necessary to establish the circumstances of the shooting, identify and arrest other suspects and recover the weapon used in the attack.

A protester sustained gunshot wounds to his upper waist and lower spine during the attack.

Fellow protesters initially took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital before he received further treatment at PG Hospital.

After partially recovering, the injured protester filed a complaint with Uttara West Police Station on 26 September 2024.

Agarwala is named as the 31st accused in the case’s first information report (FIR). The investigating officer claimed that evidence indicating his involvement in the shooting had emerged during the investigation.

Police also sought to question Agarwala to obtain the names and addresses of other suspects involved in the incident.

In a separate case, a Dhaka court earlier granted a one-day remand for Agarwala over allegations of money laundering and smuggling-related trading in gold and diamonds worth approximately Tk678.19 crore.

The case was filed with Gulshan Police Station, and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had sought a three-day remand to interrogate him.
