Imran Khan’s upcoming OTT comeback film, Adhure Hum Adhure Tum, could face a release delay after Indian authorities issued the actor a notice directing him to leave the country by 28 October. The film was scheduled to premiere on 18 December, but uncertainty over his situation has reportedly prompted discussions about postponing it.
According to NDTV, Khan, a US citizen and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, received the notice from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) after joining a protest in Mumbai that called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. The actor’s legal team plans to challenge the order in court.
The film’s release plans are now under discussion, Mid-Day reported, citing a source familiar with the project. The team had planned to begin promotions after Diwali and build momentum towards the December release. However, it is now considering a possible deferment. Netflix has not officially announced a release date.
“The team does not want to begin a campaign without knowing how the situation around Imran will play out,” the source told Mid-Day.
Adhure Hum Adhure Tum marks Khan’s return to acting after an 11-year break. His last film appearance was in Katti Batti, released in 2015. Danish Aslam directs the upcoming film, which also stars Bhumi Pednekar.
Khan attended the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidaan on 10 October, alongside his partner, Lekha Washington, and cousin Zayne Marie Khan. Police detained all three before releasing them later that day.
Following the protest, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya filed a complaint alleging that Khan had violated the rules governing foreign citizens by taking part in the demonstration. Police forwarded the complaint to the FRRO, which issued the notice directing the actor to leave India by 28 October. The office maintained that his OCI status did not permit him to participate in protests.
Khan’s legal team is preparing to contest the FRRO’s order in court.
