Bollywood actor Imran Khan has reportedly received a notice from Mumbai Police directing him to leave India by 28 October, following his participation in protests in Mumbai.
According to Hindustan Times, the development has drawn attention to the actor’s immigration status and his involvement in the demonstrations.
According to reports, the notice requires Khan to depart the country by the specified deadline.
Khan has largely stayed away from mainstream Bollywood projects in recent years.
His reported participation in the protests has now brought him back into the headlines for reasons beyond his film career.
According to reports, Khan is an American citizen who holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.
Police have initiated action under the relevant provisions of the Immigration Act, alleging that he participated in a political protest despite not being an Indian citizen.
The protest took place on 10 October at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan, where demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Police detained Khan and several other participants during the demonstration.
The action follows a complaint by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who questioned Khan’s participation in the protest given his foreign citizenship.
Khan, who is Aamir Khan’s nephew, made his Bollywood debut with Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na and later appeared in films including I Hate Luv Storys and Delhi Belly.
