Immigration police and law enforcement agencies at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport have barred Ahmed Reza Hasan Mahdi, also known as Mahdi Hasan, from leaving the country.
He is the former member secretary and prominent leader of the Habiganj district branch of Anti-Discrimination Students Movement.
When Mahdi Hasan presented himself at the outbound immigration counter at 6.30pm on Thursday to board Etihad Airways Flight EY-383 – bound for Toronto via Abu Dhabi – officers found his passport flagged on the immigration system’s stop-list.
He was subsequently transferred to the Immigration Prosecution Office. He had earlier disclosed to the media that he was scheduled to travel to Jamaica on the 9.35pm Etihad flight.
Official records show that legal proceedings are under way regarding a case with Shayestaganj Police Station.
Mahdi Hasan told the media that he is currently on bail in all cases filed against him and questioned why he was barred from leaving. Police advised him to seek judicial permission from the court in order to travel abroad, after which he left the airport area.
