Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former lawmaker Akhtaruzzaman has been sent to jail after a Dhaka court rejected his bail petition in a case filed over allegations of creating disorder at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Akhtaruzzaman was brought to the court lock-up at 2:24pm on Sunday and produced before the court of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam. After hearing the bail petition, the court rejected it and sent him to jail.
Defence lawyers sought his bail, while the prosecution opposed the petition and sought his detention.
During the hearing, chaos broke out between lawyers for the prosecution and the defence in the courtroom in the presence of the judge.
At one point, as the situation intensified, lawyers from both sides got involved in a scuffle, prompting the judge to get down from the bench. The situation was later brought under control.
Akhtaruzzaman was produced before the court after completion of his one-day remand in the case, which was filed over allegations of disorder at the airport, obstruction of government duties and assaulting an on-duty security official.
On Saturday, the investigation officer produced Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman before the court and sought a five-day remand. After hearing the prayer, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir granted him one day of remand.
