Yemen’s armed forces said early Sunday that they were carrying out strikes against the Iran-aligned Houthi movement in the capital Sanaa and its stronghold of Saada.
A spokesperson for the armed forces, which support Yemen’s internationally recognised government, said the forces were targeting what he called “vital targets” but gave no further details, reports Reuters.
Houthi-run Al Masirah TV earlier reported an attack on Sanaa, saying Saudi Arabia had carried it out. Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm the report.
Fighting between the Iran-backed Houthis and forces supporting the Saudi-backed government largely halted after a truce in 2022.
However, hostilities have resumed as the conflict spills over from the wider war between Iran and the United States.
The Houthis declared a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia in July and began attacking Saudi territory and shipping. Houthi forces have also made major territorial gains along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.
Saudi Arabia has responded with air strikes in Yemen while backing government forces in their fight to push back the Houthis.
