The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) has revised its benchmark CSE50 Index, adding seven new companies and excluding seven existing ones based on the performance of CSE-listed firms.
According to a press release issued by the exchange on Wednesday, the revised index will take effect on 11 October. The CSE50 Index undergoes semi-annual reviews to reflect changes in the performance and market representation of listed companies.
The seven newly included companies are: BSRM Steels Limited, Berger Paints Bangladesh Ltd, Dhaka Bank PLC, Fine Foods Limited, Heidelberg Materials BD PLC, Taufika Foods & Lovello Ice-Cream PLC, and The Ibn Sina Pharmaceuticals Industry PLC.
On the other hand, seven entities have been excluded from the previous CSE50 composition: Al-Arafah Islami Bank PLC, IFIC Bank PLC, Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC, Mercantile Bank PLC, One Bank PLC, The Premier Bank PLC, and United Commercial Bank PLC.
The revised CSE50 Index comprises companies from a broad range of sectors, including banking, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, fuel and power, manufacturing, financial services, food, cement, insurance, and consumer goods.
Market capitalisation and trading activity
According to figures released by the CSE, as of 30 June, the 50 constituents of the revised index represented 76.40 per cent of the full market capitalisation of all stocks listed on the exchange.
In terms of free-float market capitalisation, the index companies accounted for 72.57 per cent of the total CSE-listed market as of the same date.
Moreover, the companies included in the index represented 53.72 per cent of the average daily turnover of all stocks listed on the CSE during the six-month period ended on 30 June.
These metrics indicate the extent to which the CSE50 constituents represent the overall market in terms of market capitalisation, free-float value, and trading activity.
