Police have arrested a former Chhatra League leader in connection with a case filed over an attack on the convoy of BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in Rangunia in 2017.
Md Sohel Hossain, 30, a former president of Rangunia Government College Chhatra League, was arrested from the Gocharabazar area of Pomra in Rangunia upazila on Thursday.
He, son of Md Harun, is a resident of Ghatchek area in Ward 4 of Rangunia municipality.
Police said they tried to stop a motorcycle at a checkpoint under the Pahartali-CUET beat on Thursday afternoon.
The rider allegedly ignored the signal and attempted to flee.
Police chased the motorcycle and eventually stopped it in the Pomra Gocharabazar area, and arrested Sohel.
According to police, Sohel had remained in hiding since the political change on 5 August. He is also accused of involvement in violence, sabotage and other criminal activities in the area, police said.
Police also alleged that Sohel was involved in an attack on the convoy of Mirza Fakhrul, who was then the BNP secretary general, in Rangunia on 18 June 2017.
The attack occurred when Fakhrul was travelling with a BNP delegation towards Rangamati to visit landslide-hit areas. A case was later filed over the incident.
Rangunia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Zahir Uddin said Sohel was named in a specific case.
“He will be questioned initially after his arrest. He will then be sent to jail through the court,” he said.
Police are also checking whether Sohel has any outstanding arrest warrants in other cases, the OC added.
