International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Sunday, issued arrest warrants against four police officials, including former chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Md Asaduzzaman, over allegations of abducting, torturing, killing, and concealing the body of Maulana Abul Hossain Alamin, principal of a madrasa in Gazipur.
The tribunal passed the order after taking the prosecution’s allegations into consideration.
The other police officials subject to the arrest warrants are Police Inspector Md Asaduzzaman Mia, Police Inspector Md Mezbah Uddin Ahammad, and SI Touhidul Islam Suman.
Among the accused in the case, former ADC Ishtiaq Ahmed is currently arrested and held in prison.
Prosecutor Tarek Abdullah conducted the hearing on behalf of the prosecution in court. Earlier on 16 September, formal charges in the case were submitted to registrar office of the International Crimes Tribunal, according to Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam.
Allegation of 18 days’ illegal detention
According to the prosecution’s allegations, members of the CTTC abducted Maulana Abul Hossain Alamin, principal of Ibn Masud Madrasa in Gazipur, on 30 January 2023 for criticising policy decisions of the Awami League government.
He was subsequently held unlawfully at CTTC office located on Minto Road in Dhaka until 17 February 2023, as stated in the complaint.
The prosecution further alleged that Alamin was subjected to continuous physical and mental torture for 18 days under the leadership of ADC Ishtiaq Ahmed, leaving his physical condition critical.
Death in hospital and concealment of body
The allegations state that when Alamin was taken to Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital on 18 February 2023, he died there.
The prosecution alleged that the accused police officials concealed his body to evade responsibility for the murder.
For this reason, the body was dumped into the water from Tulsikhali Bridge over Dhaleshwari River in Lakirchar area of Keraniganj in Dhaka district.
