HONOR has recently showcased its Robot Phone at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, held from 2 to 12 September, as the Official Imaging Strategic Partner of the International Promotion Program for Chinese-Language Films. The device combines a mechanical robotic arm with a gimbal system and a 200MP camera.
Co-engineered with cinema camera and lighting company ARRI, the Robot Phone brings three of the company’s imaging technologies to a smartphone for the first time- ARRI LogC3 colour science, ARRI Wide Gamut 3 and ARRI Looks, said a press release on Wednesday.
ARRI LogC3 preserves more highlight and shadow information for post-production, while ARRI Wide Gamut 3 provides a broader colour space. ARRI Looks offers controlled cinematic colour styles, giving creators greater control over the look of footage.
The Robot Phone’s mechanical arm is paired with a gimbal system to stabilise the movement of its 200MP camera, while features including AI Object Tracking and AI SpinShot are designed to assist with moving and automatically composed shots.
HONOR also showcased the Magic9 Pro Max at the festival, featuring ARRI’s cinematic capabilities. It has a large central sensor with two lenses on the sides, resembling ARRI’s ARRIFLEX cinema cameras.
ARRI has worked in cinema imaging and production for more than a century and has received 20 Scientific and Technical Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The collaboration brings elements of a professional filmmaking workflow to a smartphone, with the two companies working to make cinematic creation more accessible while retaining creative control through capture and post-production.

The Robot Phone has previously been showcased at the 79th Cannes Film Festival and the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival.
