Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met India’s Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over breakfast in New Delhi on Sunday, drawing political attention during his visit for the BRICS Summit.
Following the meeting, Anwar shared photographs of the interaction on social media and described Rahul Gandhi as his “good friend”.
Details of the meeting, including its duration and specific issues discussed, were not disclosed. Anwar said the brief interaction focused on recent international and regional developments.
The Congress party also released photographs from the breakfast meeting, confirming Priyanka Gandhi’s presence.
Anwar is visiting India to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, where Malaysia is participating as a partner country. On Saturday, he attended a session titled “Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism”, joined a tree-planting ceremony with other world leaders and attended an official banquet hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During his visit, Anwar has held bilateral meetings with several global leaders, including Modi, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
His meeting with India’s opposition leaders came amid a busy diplomatic schedule, with Anwar’s reference to Rahul Gandhi as his “good friend” drawing attention.
However, both sides described the discussion as focused on wider regional and global developments rather than domestic political issues.
