Police have sought seven days’ remand for each of 63 foreign nationals arrested in Chattogram for their alleged involvement in an international online fraud ring.
The Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) filed the remand petition with the Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Sunday.
The court set 15 September for the hearing.
In a separate case, police sought five days’ remand for SM Mohsin and Riyadul Ahmed over the seizure of 118 grams of cocaine.
SI Rajib Kanti Dey said the seven-day remand was sought to question the 63 foreigners in a case filed under the Cyber Security Act.
SI Mohammad Tanvir Bhuiyan, investigation officer of the cocaine case, said police sought five days’ remand for each of the two accused.
Police raided the office of Stead Fast Courier Ltd on the ground floor of Bishram Bhaban on Road No 2 in South Khulshi on the night of 5 September.
Members of police, the CTU, the LIC branch and district police took part in the raid based on a tip-off.
Police recovered 118 grams of cocaine from two polythene bags during a search of parcels booked at the courier office.
The bags contained 60 grams and 58 grams of cocaine. Police estimated the value of the seized drugs at Tk 23.6 lakh.
A case was filed with Khulshi Police Station against Riyadul Ahmed of Faridganj in Chandpur and Md Alomgir of Dakshinkhan in Dhaka.
Police later arrested SM Mohsin, a resident of Akbar Shah in Chattogram, on Saturday.
The cocaine seizure led police to expand their investigation. Using information technology, investigators from the LIC branch traced alleged criminal activities to an eight-storey building on Road No 4 in the Krishnachura Residential Area under Khulshi Police Station.
After gathering information for about five days, police, the CTU, the LIC branch, the Rapid Action Battalion and members of various national intelligence agencies raided the building.
They found server stations, computers and other IT equipment on several floors and seized devices allegedly used in online fraud.
Police arrested 63 foreign nationals from China, Pakistan, Laos and Vietnam during the raid.
Police said they did not find passports on any of them.
The 63 foreigners were later shown arrested in a case filed under the Cyber Security Act and sent to jail by the court.
The CTU has now sought seven days’ remand for each of them for further questioning.
