Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested two suspected smugglers and seized 32 gold bars worth approximately Tk 7.35 crore while they were being smuggled into India through the Meherpur border.
Acting on a tip-off, a BGB team from the Nazirakona Border Outpost (BOP) took up a strategic position in the Nagarbil area, about 700 yards inside Bangladesh from border pillar 110 in Mujibnagar upazila, said a press release on Sunday.
Around 12:40 pm, the team spotted two individuals carrying a bag towards the border. When challenged, the suspects dropped the bag and attempted to flee, but BGB personnel chased and detained them.
The arrested individuals were identified as Md Asadul (50), son of the late Abu Bakkar, and Md Juel Hossain (30), son of Madar. Both are residents of Sonapur Natunpara village in Mujibnagar upazila, Meherpur.
The bag was later searched in the presence of local residents, leading to the recovery of 32 gold bars weighing 3.941 kilograms. The market value of the seized gold is estimated at Tk 7,35,19,355.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Nazmul Hasan said the arrested individuals are being handed over to Mujibnagar police station, and the seized gold is being deposited with the Meherpur Treasury Office.
The BGB Commander added that the Chuadanga Battalion remains alert to prevent gold smuggling, drug trafficking, and other cross-border crimes. Such operations will continue to ensure border security and establish a smuggling-free frontier.
