State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir on Sunday appreciated Japan’s efforts toward achieving a durable solution through the safe, voluntary, sustainable, and dignified repatriation of the Rohingyas to Rakhine State in Myanmar.
He made the remarks during a meeting with Yohei Sasakawa, Honorary Chair of the Nippon Foundation of Japan, who paid a courtesy call at the minister’s office on Sunday.
During the discussion, Sasakawa highlighted the Nippon Foundation’s long history of cooperation with Bangladesh, beginning with emergency relief for displaced persons in 1971.
He also noted the foundation’s continued support in development, healthcare, and education, as well as its recent focus on the Rohingya humanitarian crisis.
Sasakawa also informed the minister of his four‑decade involvement in global efforts to eliminate leprosy, working with WHO, governments, NGOs, and organisations of persons affected by the disease. He expressed interest in assisting leprosy patients in Bangladesh.
Kobir thanked the Nippon Foundation and Japan for their humanitarian assistance to forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals and reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to working with the international community to resolve the prolonged humanitarian and regional challenge.
