50 injured in wedding party clash in Kishoreganj

At least 50 people, including a bridegroom, were injured in a clash at Gabtoli Bazaar in Karimganj upazila of Kishoreganj on Friday.

The violence broke out after a wedding party’s vehicle was stopped and several youths allegedly demanded money to buy sweets. Two of the injured are in critical condition and were sent to hospital for advanced treatment.

Locals said the wedding party was heading to the bride’s residence in Jhautala area of Noabad union. Around 5pm Friday, youths from Dhitpur Barobari area stopped the vehicle at Gabtoli Bazaar in Bargharia union and allegedly demanded “money for sweets.”

An altercation with the groom’s party escalated into a violent clash, they added.

Mohammad Kajal of Dhitpur Barobari area said the wedding party’s vehicle caused traffic congestion in the bazaar. Later, an argument broke out between the groom’s side and an auto‑rickshaw driver.

When their people tried to intervene, a clash ensued, leaving 15–16 from their side injured, he added.

On the other hand, Helal Uddin from the groom’s side said Kajal’s brothers and nephews stopped the wedding vehicle and demanded money. He claimed at least 35 people from their side were injured in the clash.

Police rushed to the scene after receiving information and brought the situation under control.

Md Soheb Khan, officer‑in‑charge of Karimganj Police Station, confirmed the incident, saying police restored order and the situation was now normal.

He added that no written complaint had been filed, and legal action would follow an investigation once a formal complaint was lodged.
