BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said his party will once again lead the country out of the deep crisis it is currently facing.
Speaking at a rally marking the BNP’s founding anniversary in Chattogram on Tuesday, he said the party had been given the responsibility of pulling the country out of the “pit” created during the previous fascist government and the subsequent interim administration.
“The previous fascist government and the subsequent interim government, which I call ineffective, together pushed the country into a pit. Under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, we all have to work together to pull the country out of it,” he said.
Amir Khosru was addressing a rally organised by Chattogram city BNP at the Old Railway Station ground.
Recalling the party’s political struggles, he said BNP had stood by the people whenever the country faced serious crises.
He acknowledged that overcoming the present challenges would take time, but expressed confidence that they could be addressed through collective efforts under the leadership of BNP and its Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Amir Khosru praised Tarique Rahman’s economic roadmap, saying the current political and economic circumstances required a bold budget and economic programme.
“No other government or political party would have had the courage to present such a bold budget and economic programme under the present circumstances,” he said.
He said the BNP government’s budget would be fully implemented and that measures had already been initiated to address people’s problems as national concerns rather than issues affecting individuals or particular groups.
The benefits of these initiatives would become visible soon, he added.
The BNP leader warned party activists against creating disorder in the name of politics or obstructing government activities.
“Those who create obstacles to the development activities of the coming days will not be forgiven by the people,” he said.
He also urged BNP leaders and activists to remain vigilant about the law-and-order situation in their areas.
Local residents, he said, know who is involved in drug trading, extortion and land grabbing.
He instructed activists to identify drug dealers and extortionists and hand them over to law enforcement agencies instead of waiting for police to act.
Amir Khosru said the establishment of democratic elections, an elected parliament and a government had come through the blood and sacrifices of thousands of BNP leaders and activists during the party’s prolonged political movement.
He said the government’s primary responsibility now was to fulfil the expectations and aspirations of the people and urged citizens to remain patient and support its efforts.
“The success of this government is the success of BNP, the success of all of us,” he said.
He expressed hope that the government would fulfil people’s expectations over the next five years and build a “new Bangladesh” that could be presented to the world.
Amir Khosru also apologised for not being able to give party leaders and activists as much time as before because of his government responsibilities.
He, however, said BNP remained prepared to take the lead on the streets whenever necessary.
Chattogram city BNP Member Secretary Nazimur Rahman moderated the programme.
Land and Chattogram Hill Tracts State Minister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, Chattogram city BNP convener and lawmaker Ershad Ullah, and lawmaker Sayeed Al Noman also spoke at the rally.
BNP leaders and activists from different levels of the Chattogram city unit attended the programme marking the party’s founding anniversary.
