A sequel to the beloved 2003 romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is in early development at Paramount, with original star Kate Hudson attached to produce the project.

According to Variety, the studio and filmmakers hope to bring back Hudson and her original co-star Matthew McConaughey, although their returns have not yet been confirmed.

The project is currently looking for a screenwriter, and casting decisions will depend on the script.

Hudson will produce the sequel through her Shiny Penny banner alongside producer Stacey Sher, whose credits include Pulp Fiction, Erin Brockovich and Django Unchained.

The original film, released in 2003, followed magazine columnist Andie Anderson, played by Hudson, and advertising executive Benjamin Barry, played by McConaughey.

Andie sets out to drive Benjamin away as part of an article about dating, while Benjamin bets that he can make any woman fall in love with him. Their competing schemes eventually turn into a genuine romance.

Directed by Donald Petrie, the film also featured Kathryn Hahn, Adam Goldberg, Thomas Lennon, Michael Michele and Shalom Harlow.

It earned nearly $180 million worldwide against a reported $50 million budget and has since become a popular entry in the romantic comedy genre.

Plot details for the sequel remain under wraps.

The potential follow-up comes amid a renewed Hollywood interest in films from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Recent releases such as The Devil Wears Prada 2, Scary Movie and Toy Story 5 have tapped into the nostalgia trend, while Practical Magic 2, Focker-In-Law, Shrek 5 and Greta Gerwig’s Narnia are also part of the current revival.

Hudson’s involvement has fuelled hopes that she could return as Andie. Her most recent major film role was in Song Sung Blue (2025), which earned her a second Oscar nomination.

She previously received an Oscar nomination for her acclaimed performance as Penny Lane in Almost Famous.

McConaughey, meanwhile, has largely moved away from romantic comedies since the 2010s, taking on acclaimed dramatic roles in films including Mud, The Wolf of Wall Street, Interstellar and Dallas Buyers Club, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor.

While neither Hudson nor McConaughey has officially confirmed their return, the sequel could reunite one of Hollywood’s most recognisable rom-com pairings more than two decades after the original.
