Hasan Mahmud produced a stunning six-wicket haul as Bangladesh bowled Australia out for 198 in the first innings of the opening Test in Darwin.
Hasan completed his five-wicket haul by removing Steve Smith for 71. Smith had been Australia’s main resistance after Bangladesh made regular breakthroughs at the other end.
The wicket gave Hasan a fifer in his first Test appearance in Australia. The Bangladesh pacer has now taken five-wicket hauls in Tests in Australia, India and Pakistan.
Hasan was not finished there.
He returned to dismiss Nathan Lyon and complete the Australian innings. The wicket gave him career-best Test figures of 6/55.
Hasan had started the damage early in the day. He gave Bangladesh their first breakthrough by removing Jake Weatherald for 23. He then bowled Travis Head for 22 to leave Australia at 52/2.
Bangladesh’s other pacers provided strong support as the hosts continued to lose wickets. Ebadot Hossain and Taskin Ahmed both struck twice.
Australia were 74/4 at lunch before slipping to 183/8 at tea. Smith kept them alive with his 71, but Hasan eventually ended his resistance and then wrapped up the innings.
His six wickets ensured Australia could add only 15 runs after tea.
Hasan finished with 6/55 as Australia were bowled out for 198, giving Bangladesh a strong start to their first Test in Australia in more than two decades.
