Bangladesh’s fastest man Imranur Rahman missed out on the men’s 100 metres semi-finals after finishing 27th overall at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Monday. He clocked 10.39 seconds in the first round and finished third in Heat 9.
The London-based sprinter competed against 73 athletes at Scotstoun Stadium. His time left him outside the qualification places, with Barbados’ Kurron Griffith claiming the final semi-final spot in 10.24 seconds.
Imranur made a sharp start and briefly challenged for the lead before losing ground in the closing metres. His 10.39-second effort fell well short of his personal best of 10.11 seconds, which he set at the Newham and Essex Beagles Outdoor Series in London in 2023.
Despite the early exit, Imranur still ranked as the second-fastest South Asian athlete in the event. Sri Lanka’s Dineth Induwara posted 10.33 seconds, while India’s Gurindervir Singh matched Imranur’s 10.39.
The result also came after Imranur retained his status as Bangladesh’s fastest man in May by winning the national athletics championships with a time of 10.58 seconds. He has now claimed the national sprint title six times across the National and Summer Athletics meets.
Imranur remains Bangladesh’s most successful sprinter in recent years after making history by winning the 60 metres gold medal at the 2023 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships.
Bangladesh are still searching for their first medal at the Glasgow Games. Boxer Rakib Hossain has kept those hopes alive after reaching the quarter-finals in the men’s 55kg category. Earlier, United States-based boxer Zinnat Ferdous lost 5-0 to Ireland’s Caitlin Fryers in the women’s 51kg round of 16.
