Ángel Di María has urged Lionel Messi to continue playing for Argentina, dismissing speculation that the 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain should mark the end of the captain’s international career.
Retirement rumours intensified after Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the World Cup final, ending the Albiceleste’s reign as world champions. However, Di María believes the 39-year-old still has much more to offer.
Speaking to TNT Sports, the former Argentina winger said Messi should decide his future on his own terms.
“Yes, Leo should continue for as long as he wants. I think he can carry on for many more years.”
Di María said Messi continues to perform at the highest level despite approaching his 40th birthday.
“At 39 years old he has proven that he is still one of the best, indeed one of the best in the history of football. I don’t think there is a ceiling on what he can offer.”
The former Real Madrid and Benfica star also expressed his hope that head coach Lionel Scaloni remains in charge as Argentina begin planning for the future.
“He is the leader of this Scaloneta and this national team. I hope he continues. I believe he is building a wonderful generation of young players, and that is something in the national team’s interest.”
Di María admitted the final decision rests with Messi but made clear what he wants to see.
“The decision is his, of course. He knows what he wants, but as an Argentine I hope he continues his mission with the national team.”
