The Jahangirnagar University (JU) administration has formed a four-member investigation committee to probe alleged irregularities in the stock and distribution of medicines at the university’s Medical Centre.
In a simultaneous move, Md Nur-e-Kamal, deputy registrar (store) of the Medical Centre, has been suspended to facilitate a fair investigation.
These decisions were announced on Thursday through two separate office orders signed by Acting Registrar ABM Azizur Rahman.
According to the office orders, the probe committee is tasked with identifying the causes behind the stock discrepancies, verifying the truth of the allegations, and identifying those responsible to determine accountability. The committee has been directed to submit its findings within 15 working days.
The university’s treasurer has been appointed as the convener of the committee. The other members are Professor Md Salekul Islam of Department of Microbiology and Associate Professor Abdus Sattar of Department of Philosophy.
Alauddin Molla, deputy registrar (Council Section) of the Registrar’s Office, will serve as the member-secretary.
The suspension of Kamal follows a recommendation from Medical Centre’s Advisory Committee. The action was taken under Section 10(a)(2) of the University Employee Efficiency and Discipline Ordinance, effective from the morning of 23 July.
During the suspension period, he will receive a subsistence allowance at the rate of half of his last basic salary, though he will remain entitled to full ad-hoc grants and other applicable allowances.
The administrative action follows allegations that 19,567 units of medicine went missing from the JU Medical Centre’s stock over a 21-day period between 30 June and 21 July. The estimated market value of the unaccounted-for medicine is approximately Tk73,110.
