Three young men were killed and two others critically injured after three motorcycles collided head-on in Ajmiriganj upazila of Habiganj on Thursday evening.
The accident occurred at around 7pm near Jalsukha Bridge on the under-construction Ajmiriganj–Shalla regional highway in Jalsukha union.
The deceased were identified as Antor, 25, of Paharpur village in Ajmiriganj, Tanvir, 18, of Amirkhani village in Baniachong, and Abidul Laskar, 32.
The injured are Shahidul Islam Bachchu, 35, of Shekhergaon village, and Md Mizan Mia, 27, of Thoigaon village in Chunarughat upazila.
Police and local sources said the three speeding motorcycles collided near the bridge, killing Tanvir at the scene.
Local residents rescued four others and took them to Habiganj Modern District Hospital, where doctors declared Antor and Abidul dead.
Shahidul and Mizan were later transferred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital after their conditions deteriorated.
Ajmiriganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Akbar Hossain said excessive speed appeared to have caused the crash.
“Police are investigating the exact cause of the accident,” he said, adding that the bodies had been kept at the Habiganj Modern District Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
