What happens when a reported $250 million Hollywood epic meets an AI-generated film made for the cost of a luxury car? Audiences may soon find out as two very different versions of Odysseus’ legendary journey arrive almost side by side.
AI production company Fountain O has unveiled Odysseus: The Fall, its second feature directed by Ash Koosha. The 135-minute film was produced on what the company calls a “mid-five-figure” budget, a tiny fraction of Christopher Nolan’s reported $250 million The Odyssey for Universal Pictures. The project follows Koosha’s AI-generated Dreams of Violets, which reportedly cost just $2,000 to make and premiered at the Tribeca Festival. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the development.
Fountain O said the announcement was deliberately timed to coincide with Nolan’s film, which opens in cinemas on 17 July. “We very much hope that Christopher Nolan’s film, The Odyssey, is a raging success at the box office,” Koosha said, adding that he hopes audiences will compare “the ultimate in human creation” with “one man’s collaboration with AI.”
While Nolan’s adaptation boasts a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Travis Scott and Charlize Theron, Odysseus: The Fall replaces actors, sets and cameras entirely with AI models. Koosha wrote the script, created the imagery and voiced the characters himself.
The film reimagines Odysseus’ return home as the fragmented memories of a drowning man, ending not with triumph but forgiveness.
Koosha argued AI is a storytelling tool rather than a threat. Executive chairman Tom Rogers said the release allows audiences to compare traditional filmmaking with AI-generated cinema, while producer Pooya Koosha revealed the production used Kling, Google Nanobanana, Claude AI, Google Gemini and Fountain O’s proprietary technology.
Neither a streamer nor a theatrical distributor has acquired Dreams of Violets. Fountain O will instead stream both films on its website for $9.99 each. Dreams of Violets launches on 17 July, while Odysseus: The Fall will debut later this summer.
