Michael Waldron is developing a feature film based on Marvel Comics character Nova for Marvel Studios, with the writer also considering directing the project if it moves forward.

According to Deadline, sources confirmed that Waldron is working on the film after rumours emerged last week about his involvement with a possible Nova project. The project remains in the early stages of development, but Waldron has joined to write the script and could direct it in the future.

Marvel Studios and Waldron’s representatives did not comment on the report.

The studio had previously been developing Nova as a television series, with Sabir Pirzada writing the script. However, Marvel shelved the plan in 2025. The project resurfaced last week after Waldron’s Writers Guild of America (WGA) card listed Nova as one of his credits, revealing that he had been brought in to develop a new pitch.

Nova first appeared in a 1976 issue of Super Adventures. In the comics, the character was part of the intergalactic police force known as the Nova Corps. He gained superhuman abilities, including enhanced strength, flight and resistance to injury.

Although Nova has had limited interactions with major figures from the current and past Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the character has fought the Skrulls, who have played key roles in recent Marvel projects, including Captain Marvel and the limited series Secret Invasion.

Waldron has a strong connection with Disney and Marvel. He wrote the Marvel Studios film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and later served as showrunner for the Marvel series Loki.

Beyond superhero projects, Waldron created and executive produced the critically acclaimed wrestling drama Heels for Starz, starring Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig. The series gained a new global audience after arriving on Netflix.

Waldron’s production company, Anomaly, currently has an overall deal with Disney. He recently completed production on the second season of Hulu’s Chad Powers, starring Glen Powell. He is represented by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
