A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death by unidentified assailants in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria on Friday night.
The victim, identified as Jihad, was the son of Azgar Ali of Kuttapara village in Sarail.
The incident took place around 10pm beside the BRAC office in the Khatihata Highway Police Station area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
Family members alleged that Jihad may have been killed either during an attempt to snatch his mobile phone or as part of a pre-planned attack. His mobile phone was missing from the scene.
Relatives said Jihad had gone out in the evening after playing football with friends to bring his father home. When he did not return at night, family members began searching for him and later found his bloodied body lying beside the road.
They said the attackers stabbed him with a sharp weapon on his left hand and thigh. He was taken to Brahmanbaria District Sadar Hospital, where emergency department physician Ananta Kumar declared him dead.
The doctor said Jihad died due to excessive bleeding.
Jihad’s father Azgar Ali said, “My son went out after Maghrib prayer to bring me home. When he did not return at night, we searched for him and found him lying injured beside the road. His mobile phone was also missing. He was either killed by robbers or someone planned the murder. I want the people involved to be arrested quickly.”
Sarail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Manzur Kader Bhuiyan said police were investigating the incident with importance.
“It is not possible to say at this stage whether it was a robbery or another reason behind the killing. We are investigating the matter. CCTV footage has been collected and evidence from the scene has been preserved. Several teams are working to uncover the mystery,” he said.
The body has been sent to the morgue for post-mortem examination.
Police said they were working to identify and arrest those involved in the killing as soon as possible.
