Director Kaushik Ganguly’s Aajo Ardhangini, the sequel to the acclaimed 2023 film Ardhangini, releases on Friday with Jaya Ahsan once again at the heart of the story.
The film reunites audiences with familiar characters while taking the narrative in a new direction. Jaya’s performance in the first film earned widespread praise from audiences and critics, and the sequel once again revolves around her character, exploring emotional conflicts, relationships and the complexities of life.
Speaking ahead of the release, Ganguly said he had envisioned a sequel while making Ardhangini, but the overwhelming response to the original film encouraged him to bring the idea to the screen. He recalled hearing audiences discuss the film wherever he went after its release and said their affection exceeded his expectations, even as the film competed with a big-budget release.
Describing filmmaking as planting a seed, the director said a film grows only through the love, acceptance and support of its audience. He added that Aajo Ardhangini explores the complexities of relationships, the tension between the past and present, and emotions that often remain unspoken. He believes the idea that the past never truly disappears forms one of the film’s central themes.
Ganguly also said he has always been interested in portraying women’s emotions, psychology and struggles, describing the exploration of female characters as an important creative responsibility. Like the original film, the sequel features Jaya Ahsan alongside Churni Ganguly in key roles.
Jaya has been busy promoting the film despite falling ill while travelling across the city in heavy rain. She said audiences appeared highly excited after watching the trailer and that interest had grown even stronger than it was for the first film. According to the actress, shows at the confirmed theatres have already sold out, while audiences are waiting for the complete list of cinemas to book tickets.
Asked what viewers could expect from the sequel, Jaya offered only a hint, saying, “All I can say is that this time the dose is a little stronger.”
Reflecting on her long collaboration with Ganguly, whose films Bisorjon, Bijoya and Ardhangini helped establish her reputation in West Bengal, Jaya described him as an exceptional director, actor and screenwriter. She said his understanding of building relationships through screenwriting was unparalleled.
Speaking about Aajo Ardhangini, Jaya said the film contains moments of intense curiosity and several complex, emotionally sensitive twists. “I wouldn’t wish such a situation on even my worst enemy,” she said.
Alongside Jaya Ahsan, the film also stars Churni Ganguly, Kaushik Sen, Ambarish Bhattacharya, Lily Chakraborty, Indrasish Roy, Raya Bhattacharya and Dimple Acharyya.
