Bangladesh State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque has urged supporters to keep World Cup celebrations peaceful after revealing that at least 10 people have died in football-related violence across the country.
Speaking in parliament on Thursday during a discussion on a private motion raised by BNP lawmaker Mohammad Abdul Malek, the minister expressed concern over clashes and disorder linked to the FIFA World Cup.
He said football had united supporters across Bangladesh but warned that growing rivalry between Brazil and Argentina fans had also led to violent incidents.
“The whole of Bangladesh is now gripped by FIFA World Cup fever. Our young people are enjoying football in communities across the country.”
“But there have also been several violent incidents linked to the World Cup. So far, 10 people have lost their lives.”
Aminul urged supporters to remember that football should remain a source of enjoyment rather than conflict.
“I want to tell the people of Bangladesh that sport is about enjoyment. It is nothing more than that. There will be debates and discussions. In Bangladesh, the excitement surrounding Brazil and Argentina should remain joyful, not violent.”
He also appealed to the public to prevent further unrest.
“I urge everyone to ensure that no one loses their life because of disorder or violence linked to the World Cup.”
The minister said football had created a festive atmosphere across the country, with supporters gathering in homes and public venues to watch matches. He added that enthusiasm for the tournament should never lead to violence or the loss of life.
