Following a period of prolonged legal complications, the Bangladesh Shipbreakers and Recyclers Association (BSBRA) has successfully formed its new leadership.
The organization’s highly anticipated biennial election took place on Saturday, at the Radisson Blu Chattogram Bay View hotel, marking the end of the legal gridlock.
Mohammad Mohsin Chowdhury, Vice Chairman of the prominent industrial conglomerate PHP Family, was elected President of the association unopposed.
Voting commenced at 9am and concluded at 1pm. Following the vote count, Election Board Chairman Md. Aftab Uddin officially announced the results at approximately 2pm.
The election saw a high voter turnout, with 71 out of 84 eligible members (84.5%) casting their ballots. While the presidency was decided uncontested, a total of 14 candidates competed for the remaining 11 executive committee positions.

Vision for the Future: Policy Reform & Green Recycling
Speaking to the Times of Bangladesh after his victory, the newly elected President Mohammad Mohsin Chowdhury expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming and spontaneous turnout, noting that the enthusiasm reflected a collective desire for change within the association.
Looking ahead, Chowdhury emphasized the economic weight of the shipbreaking sector and outlined his core priorities:
“We are the highest tax-paying association in Bangladesh, and we look forward to the government’s continued cooperation. Globally, Bangladesh is already positioning itself well with the transition to green ship recycling, and several of our members have prepared certified green yards. However, to fully capitalize on this, certain government policies need to be reformed. We will work closely with policymakers to achieve this and drive the sector forward together.
