The administration of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall at Jahangirnagar University (JU) has issued show-cause notices to four resident students following the hoisting of a black and white flag inscribed with the Kalima.
A three-member investigation committee was formed on Thursday to verify the facts of the incident.
Prof Mir Ferdous Hossain, a hall warden, has been named the convener of the committee. The other members are Warden Ujjwal Kumar Mondal and Dr Shahadat Hossain.
The students receiving the notices are Mohammad Rakib of the Public Administration department (50th batch), Giasuddin Suman of the Chemistry department (52nd batch), Arif Hasnat Shamim (53rd batch), and Saad Abdur Rahman of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department (55th batch).
According to the official notice, the flag was displayed on the balcony of Room 302, located on the third floor of the hall’s “A” Block, on Saturday.
The hall administration initiated the move after images of the flag spread on social media, eliciting various reactions among the student body.
The hall administration said as residents of the room involved, the students bear responsibility for the incident. They have been directed to appear at the convener’s office by 10am on Sunday to submit their written explanations.
Hall Provost Professor Mohammad Abdur Razzak said the investigation committee was constituted with the approval of the university administration.
“Written statements will be taken from the concerned students for the sake of the investigation,” the provost said, adding that the committee might also speak with those who circulated the matter on social media if necessary.
The university administration will take further decisions once the investigation report is submitted.
